Gabriel Basso is the lead of the new action-thriller series The Night Agent.

Basso plays FBI agent Peter Sutherland, an ow-level FBI agent who works nights in the basement of the White House manning a phone line for undercover spies that never rings. Peter got the job thanks to the White House Chief of Staff Dianne Farr, played by a formidable Hong Chau. Farr offered Peter the job after he stopped a terrorist attack on the subway, she needed someone hardworking, trustworthy, and loyal. Usually, agents who have “worked the phone” get to pick their assignments afterward. Some conspiracy bloggers accused Peter to be involved in the attack.

Every day feels the same for Peter but one night, the phone does ring. On the other line a terrified civilian Rose Larkin (Luciane Buchanan), a tech CEO whose aunt and uncle are assassinated will set into motion a chain of events uncovering a conspiracy that reaches all the way to the Oval Office.

Peter will be sent to protect Rose, the two will start to investigate together the murder of Rose’s uncle and aunt, which will be linked to the terrorist attack and the presence of moles in the White House. Unfortunately, along the way, Peter will become a main suspect.

The second plotline in the series follows the daughter of the Vice President of The United States and her secret service detail, Erik Monks (D.B.Woodside) and Chelsea Arrington (Fola Evans-Akingbola).

The series is based on Matthew Quirk’s bestselling novel of the same name.

The Night Agent is incredibly engaging to watch, it keeps the viewers on the edge of their seats for all ten episodes, thanks to its writing and to the fact that every episode ends with a cliffhanger. Even if ten episodes might seem a lot, the pace, the writing, the editing, and the directing never make them slow or boring.

The series is packed with action, twists and turns. It’s not a new take on the genre, the story is a classic espionage, action-thriller series, with a political intrigue, and familial drama.

There are multiple cliche and predictable moments but thanks to the writing it’s captivating and interesting and easy to follow, which is a very positive attribute. Too many times an action-espionage series is packed with too much information and names becoming too difficult to follow. It’s easily bingeable, you’ll want to devour it.

Predictable but never boring.

The cast is great and it fits well together, Basso and Buchanan have great chemistry as well as D.B. Woodside and Fola Evans-Akingbola.

There have been times when I thought Hong Chau was the lead of the series, without a doubt, the best performance. She gave Dianne so many shades and facets, and her performance is magnificent, until the mid of the series you are still undecided if you can trust her or not.

It could come easy to compare it with The Recruit, but the last one has some comical moments that The Night Agent simply doesn’t. But, if you ask me, The Night Agent is much more compelling and exciting and I would find myself rewatching it over The Recruit.

I can easily see this series being a success for Netflix.

The secret of The Night Agent lies in its simplicity: an effortless political, espionage, action-thriller yet, so engaging it will keep the viewers on the edge of their seats until the very end.
