Gus, Jepperd, Bear, and the hybrids are back on Netflix with Sweet Tooth season 2 after almost two years of wait.
When it comes to series, Netflix usually releases its original content once a year, for some series it could be a year and a half between seasons but waiting roughly two years for 8 episodes is excessive.
Gus and his fellow hybrids will find new strength as they uncover the origins of the Great Crumble.
In Sweet Tooth Season 2, a deadly new wave of the Sick is bearing down on humanity. Gus and a band of other child hybrids are held prisoner by the villainous General Abbot (Neil Sandilands) and the Last Men, a violent group of mercenaries who hunt hybrids. Abbot uses the children as fodder for the experiments of captive Dr. Aditya Singh (Adeel Akhtar); Abbot wants to find a cure and amass power, Dr. Singh simply wants to save his infected wife, Rani (Aliza Vellani). Gus, always a hero, agrees to help Dr. Singh, thus beginning a dark journey into discovering his own origins. He may also learn more about his mother, Birdie’s (Amy Seimetz) role in the events leading up to the Great Crumble.

Elsewhere, Jepperd (Nonso Anozie) and Aimee Eden (Dania Ramirez) team up to free the hybrids, creating a partnership that will be tested as Jepperd’s secrets come to light.
For this review, the synopsis is kept very short not only because I try to keep my reviews spoiler free, for the most part, but mainly because season 2 simply stalls, it doesn’t progress.
Sweet Tooth season 2 is a filler season, a bridge between season 1 and a potentially season 3.
The pace seems to be one of the biggest problems for this series, season 1 already had some issues with it, that only got worse with its second season. It seems the viewer is watching two-hour-long episodes, very slow, and tedious. Overall, the story doesn’t progress and the majority of the characters don’t grow.
The hybrids are imprisoned for most of the episodes and they are constantly trying a new way to escape. Aimee and Jepperd, on the other hand, keep thinking of new plans to save their children.
Bear is the character who suffers the most from the writing, it seems the writers didn’t know what to do with her. Her character is completely wasted, her story improves only towards the end of the season when she gets back with Gus and Jepperd, and establishes a connection with Wendy.
Only in the sixth episode, the story gets better, mainly because the groups established in the first season get back together and the series reacquires the charm and emotions that made the first season so popular.

Dr. Singh, his wife Rani, and Johnny Abbot, the brother of General Abbot, are the only characters that grow and develop from the first season.
The visual effects represent another issue in this second installment, some are great and effective but others are awful and feel very cheap, especially when it comes to the hybrids. Bobby is not always impressive and the crocodile attack, for example, in episode 3 is embarrassing, especially considering the budget that a series like Sweet Tooth has.
The acting is great, just like the first season.
Sweet Tooth season 2 is a step back from the first, the tone is very heavy and somber throughout the season but the lovely and charming moments arrive only towards the end.
There’s a lack of character development and story progression. The series is simply a bridge to season 3, that even if not announced yet, is clearly set in place at the end of the 8th episode. It’s still an enjoyable series but the slow pace of the first 6 episodes could discourage some viewers to keep watching until the end.
